LIVESETS: The Groovjuice EP is the 5th release for digital-ONLY record label Infamous Light Recordings. This release features a deep jazzy house sound from UK producer Robert Hayes. The opening track titled ''The Chant'' is a driving number with some cool background ethnic vocals. Up next is the standout of the EP, ''Makes Me Wonder'' - funky, with smooth sax/piano parts, and very emotive synth pads. ''Sabor Del La Sol'' is another sax-driven piece that makes use of some interesting crowd noises. And the finale is ''Stand Up'', a very deep soulful track that would be perfect as the closer for those late night club moments. All round a very well produced EP from a talented new producer on the deep house circuit.
DISCOID: UK producer Robert Hayes offers us another of his soulful jazz house productions in the form of this EP. 'The Chant' grooves along nicely with some atmospheric key work leading the way and just a hint of vocals, this is a track that will go down well in the cafe's of Ibiza this Summer. 'Makes Me Wonder' is a bit more blatant for the floor, less atmospheric and rather funky, 'Sabor Del La Soul' has a strong bass driven beat (with some cheeky sample use) and finally 'Stand Up' that includes that type of gospel vocal that many of you seem to enjoy. All in all a good EP, track it down! - David Colkett, Discoid/Sound Barrier (Italy)
BLUES AND SOUL MAGAZINE: To be honest I know virtually nothing about this producer or label, but one of the perks of my job is that I get to hear music that I'd probably miss otherwise. Groovjuice EP is great little 4 track EP with each track keeping to the same vibe. Crisp drums, precise keys and a combination sax, flute & guitar that keeps the interest going. 'Makes Me Wonder' is currently my choice cut, but the beauty about this EP is that each listen brings a new favourite. (CZ) 3/5
INTHEMIX: Upfront, soulful, funky and innovative house at its very best, no cheese; all class. The opening track on the EP is titled “The Chant”; it features the effective use of the house drum beat and classical instrumentalism. The track has a soulful yet club friendly feel; achieved by a grand piano riff, uplifting strings and subtle groovy bassline. The heavily dubbed chanting vocal positions this track on the deep house tip. Next up is the illegally funky “Makes Me Wonder”. A funky guitar and maracas introduce the track, and uplifting strings bring us into the body of the track. The bassline of the track is very club friendly and suits the track perfectly. The closing stages sees the track build with hypnotic woodwind instrumentals leading into limited use of hardly distinguishable vocals. Tending towards downtempo house, this is a production of high originality and utmost quality. “Sabor De La Sol” showcases the funkier side of Hayes. A rolling bassline, lots of hi-hats, and the use of crowd vocals make this very club friendly. The masterful use of limited trumpet is the real key to this track. Upfront soulful house at its very best, no cheese; all class. Winding up Groovjuice EP is; “Stand Up”. As suggested by the tracks name the tune is funkier and highly dancefloor friendly! Similar elements are used as appear in his previous works, more vocals here and a jazzy bassline make this track a success. If you like it downtempo and soulful on a funky house tip, then don’t hesitate to check out Robert Hayes Groovjuice EP, you won’t be disappointed.
FEEDBACK
"This EP from Robert Hayes is a pleasant affair...'The Chant' floats a looped vocal over rushing synths, pensive strings and a cool bass with a disturbing edge. 'Makes Me Wonder' is thudding guitar funker, whilst 'Sabor De La Sol' lets a laughing sax do all the donkey work. 'Stand Up' is kept in a vertical position by smiley-faced guitars, synths that have been browned by the sun and an acrobatically inclined flute."
Jon Freer, Mosoul (UK).
"'The Chant' opens this ILR release with bounding beats, simple keys and plenty of cool vibes. It's an easy going sound, warm and friendly, mellow but still enough to make you want to nod along to its moody groove. 'Makes Me Wonder' adds a touch of glam to the sound, lifting the tempo with a great bassline and cracking sax. 'Sabor De La Sol' has tougher beats, with more smooth, jazzy sax to enjoy. The tempo bumps along at a nice pace with a touch of disco funk. 'Stand Up' rounds things off with some more delicious beats and a romping flute not forgetting some vocal slices. Happy, house music made for summer."
