m8 MAGAZINE: Now on it's 3rd release, Infamous Light Recordings are ready to hit the big time with this EP. 4 tracks to choose from and each one a little beauty. 'Discosaurus' is a full on tech-houser that uses an extremely funky acid line. 'Cobra' meanwhile is slightly deeper and has some wonderful sweeping synths. Track 3 'Somnaural' ups the pace again, techs things up a bit and uses a stunning melody. Last but not least is 'Physics Girl', which is a dark trancer that uses an almighty kick drum. An absolutely awesome EP. Rating M8/M8 - Derek Taylor

365 MAG: Based in Australia, Infamous Light Recordings is one of a raft of new record labels foregoing the vagaries of the vinyl market and offering their releases as MP3s only, courtesy of sites such as EDM Digital and Beatport. This method allows them to put the emphasis on the music, rather than manufacturing costs and artwork, and if the Feng Shui EP is anything to go by, this approach is working. Discosaurus is a techy affair, with twisted synths and a bass-line to match. The pads are high-pitched and float through the track to great effect. Cobra is a futuristic progressive workout, with a superb synth sound I just can't get enough of! As with Discosaurus, the pads drift cut through the music like a razor and add a spooky, ethereal feel to proceedings. This is a strong track and should receive support from a wide variety of DJs. My favourite track, Somnaural, oozes acidic like a leaking battery (or is that alkali? I failed science at school). The arpeggio twinkles and swirls whilst pads and percussion drive the track on into a peak time frenzy. The old skool flavour is not hard to detect, but this is a modern, forward-thinking piece and is the strongest here. Physics Girl is the most pumping track of the lot. It is not hard to detect influences from both the techno and psychedelic trance scenes here, with these elements woven intricately together on top of a pumping bass-line. Intelligent dance-floor fodder that will gain plays from the prog, tech and trance fraternities alike. This is a real winner from Infamous Light. 23-year-old Jairus Miller's debut release shows youthful exuberance, a willingness to experiment, and musical maturity beyond his years.

PROGRESSIVE SOUNDS: Jairus Miller breaks out with a cool collection of music for Infamous Recordings. The ´Feng Shui EP´ captures elements of house and techno, older rave sounds and break beats, all mixed together perfectly with a funky sass. Jairus grew up on an island off the coast of Maine in the United States, and had a love and passion for music at an early age. He started first with piano lessons, then moved into his own using computer based synthsis, and has now released his first EP on a respected label. The first of the bunch, ´Discosaurus´ has a house beat with and electro spark. A deep and spacey atmosphere builds with acid, while a washy air noise rises above with a ringing tone, and blasts off into a massive techy raved up sound. A watery groove sticks under the tune keeping it all down and funky. The sound of ´Cobra´ is rich, with layers of tech house synths wrapped up with cool beats. A fat bassline takes over after a cool intro of deep drums and spacey sounds. Watery tones lay on top of drums, smoothing over them. Looming synths sways the tune to where it wants to go, weaving in and out, and finally dropping everything into a deep bassy break. Creepy sounds and a nice melody kick back in, along with stabbing layers that are gated, and shuffle perfectly with the beats. A tribal drum heavy tune ´Somnaural´, switches moods have way in the middle to explore a trippy hypnotic sound. A sassy housey bassline steps in quickly, bringing in the funk. After a drop, cascading sounds and out of control synths, twist and turn the tune into a massive peak of building layers. A major hook comes in and controls you till the end, falling back into a tribal beat. There´s an older trance and break beat sound to ´Physics Girl´. An old school dirty break starts in, while a creeping looming synth fades over the beats. A quick change, and the tune breaks into a bouncy kick drum with a galloping bassline. Acid takes over the tune, and along with some crazy mental effects and heavy beats, creates a surreal atmosphere of spaced out energetic sounds. The ´Feng Shui EP´ turns out to be quite a cool bunch of tunes. There´s something here for everyone, from techno and house to breaks, all executed very well by newcomer Jairus Miller. The 3rd release for Australia´s Infamous Light Recordings seems to be their best release yet.

INTHEMIX: Established in January of this year, Melbourne-based tech house record label Infamous Light Recordings is a label with a difference. Rather than be your traditional vinyl or CD producing record label, it’s a purely digital only label, with their music released solely as MP3s online. Jairus Miller’s Feng Shui EP marks their third release. After being exposed to music from a young age, Jairus began releasing music online in 1998. Now at only 23 years of age the talented American is already taking his music global, “striving to transcend geographical and genre boundaries”. Falling into the nu progressive spectrum of tech house, Feng Shui EP shows a forward thinking style willing to explore the reaches of the tech house genre, whilst maintaining a dance floor sensibility. First up on the EP is Discosaurus, described as “a rare and beautiful animal…nocturnal in nature, eclectic in taste, and dazzling in plumage”. Not exactly a disco track, instead Discosaurus contains very danceable driving beats, with dubbed-out textures and weird sounding synths layered over the top. The next track is the dark futuristic Cobra. A hypnotic, shimmering synth melody and twisting bassline combine to “burrow deep into the brain stem”. This is followed by the not at all sleeplike Somnaural. An upfront track that combines progressive sounds and tribal percussion, it’s well suited to late at night when you’re doing anything but sleeping. The EP is rounded up with Physics Girl. Complex beats and futuristic sounds combine on this slower track, well described as a piece of “techno influenced abstract futurism”. I’m not sure what it’ll do for your Feng Shui, but I highly recommend downloading this EP.

FEEDBACK

"[Discosaurus]: Bubly Sounds combined with crisp hats kick this track off...As the thunderous bassline kicks in you know this track is destined to devastate dancefloor after dancefloor. [Cobra]: This track feels like it belongs in a John Digweed GU Series mix cd... A very dark driving progressive track, Cobra is an essential track for any opening DJ...Easily my favorite track on the EP! [Somnaural]: ...a dark spacey number that is meant to be played on large sound systems...With a grooving bassline and various sound effects working their way throughout the track, Somnaural is a perfect example of how progressive trance should sound..."
Phil Martinez, Eccentric Beats (UK)

"'Discosaurus' is a potential candidate to become one of the most played tunes during next year's Winter Music Conference in Miami Beach, Florida...'Cobra' has many musical layers that offer intellectual dynamism to the listener. Two thumbs-up...[Somnaural]: One of the tunes DJs can use to warm-up or wrap a session, no matter where [it] is being played...[Physics Girl]: ...a spectacular dark vintage sound that reminds me of those club-house anthems days."
Felipe Moura, Tune Exposure (USA).

"F'n ace! Every track offers something truly different. Played 'Somnaural' last week on the show, going to play 'Physics Girl' tomorrow night. Will be charting this asap...this is just incredible sh*t!"
Mike Traylor, FNX Radio (USA).

"Some great tracks there which i've played out (Discosaurus & Cobra). Great groove for the dancefloor, keeps the crowd more than happy...Discosaurus is my fave."
Steve Gerrard, Wrecked Angle/Nascent/Bedrock (UK).

"...will chart the tunes, for suuure! It's the techy vibe of 'Cobra' that i liked most, some aggressive elements, along with the trippy piano bits..."
Kosmas Epsilon, EQ Grey/Precinct (Greece).

"Really good. Again another diverse and intelligent collection of music...1-3 really do it for me...Another winner for Infamous Light."
Cass, Sabotage Systems (UK).

"A very high quality EP...'Cobra' would have to be my favourite. Deep and funky with just a little bit of twistedness. It's got a great structure to it, building from the percussion in the beginning before the the bassline kicks in. With 'Somnaural' another nice cut on more of a tech trance tip. Not what I expected at all! Both of these tracks at least fit nicely inside a "progressive" set. Looking forward to giving them a workout very soon."
Dean Millson, Tranzfusion/Private Function (AUS).

"...the production on all tracks was very good...the first 3 tracks were great, especially track 3 [Somnaural] which I liked very much."
Mark DiCristo, Highland/Vapour (AUS).

"...this is an EP that has it all! From techy sounds to more hard and agressive patterns. Don't be surprised if you catch me playing "Somnaural" as well, in late summer sets. Thanx ILR once again."
Andrew K, Pure Substance/Underground Lessons/Armada (Greece).

"Track 2 [Cobra] - the bassline is awesome!! ...Sounds fresh and innovative..."
Andre Absolute, Monobasic (Switzerland).

"[Cobra] really stands out for me the most... Cool tune, moody tech house at it's best!"
Robbie Lowe (AUS).

"An absolute stormer. Wouldn't sound out of place played in techno, techhouse, progressive or broken beat sets, a definite floorfiller."
Steve Nowland (AUS).

"...like the new stuff...Unique sounds are wealthy."
Mark Kovach, djsinbox (USA).

"...played 003 just @ Rhythm Factory ...went down a treat."
Paul Fletcher, Rhythm Factory (UK).

"Interesting new music."
Flash Brothers (Israel).
